On homeowner trimmers, it is located on the bar code label on the fan casing. On professional units and brushcutters it is on the bar code label and stamped in the top of the cylinder or main crank case. All current serial numbers will be nine digits long and begin with the numbers 1, 2, 5, 8 or 9.

Many STIHL hand-held power-tools use 2-stroke combustion engines but some chainsaws, hedge trimmers, grass trimmers and other tools use engines with 2-MIX technology – so what's the difference and what does it mean for you when you are using the tools?

A 2-cycle engine has one fill port with a cap that has fuel pump and oil can icon. The cap will usually state the oil to fuel mix ratio. A 4-cycle engine has two fill ports with each cap separately identifying the fuel tank from the oil sump.
